An org chart tells you who reports to whom. It rarely tells you who people trust, whose interpretation travels fastest, or who can quietly stop a change from taking hold.
Before a launch, reorganization or difficult announcement, draw a second map. Start with the people who explain decisions to others: a respected manager, a long-serving colleague, a customer-facing team lead. Their influence may have little to do with their title.
Three questions before the announcement
- Who needs to understand first? Give the people fielding questions enough context to answer honestly.
- Whose concern has not reached the decision-makers? Make room for the awkward question while the plan can still change.
- Where will the conversation happen afterward? A message needs a useful life beyond the launch email.
A relationship map is a listening tool, not a list of people to manage around. Use it to bring more reality into the plan, then check whether the words still match what people experience.
